About Raff's Reflections

Canon EOS 33 film SLR and Canon 6D DSLR cameras resting on black and white photographic prints, alongside a strip of developed film negatives and rolls of Ilford and Kodacolor film, on a wooden surface — Raff Karva Photography

My passion for photography started with darkrooms — the mysterious alchemy of watching an image appear on paper in the red light. That pull never left. Digital is more convenient, but nothing replaces the experience of developing a forgotten roll and finding moments you didn't know you'd lost. I still have at least fifty undeveloped rolls in a drawer somewhere. A couple of years ago I developed a fifteen year old roll and found photographs of my mum, who passed away too soon and whom I miss every single day.

That's what photography is, at its core — not just capturing moments, but keeping them.

My love for languages developed alongside photography. I went on to study linguistics, got a master's degree in semantics, and later completed a Post-Grad in PR and Effective Communication — which probably explains why I think carefully about words, including the ones on this blog.

Outside of photography and writing I follow live music obsessively, think too much about astronomy and quantum physics, run, cycle, swim, and am working toward an Ultra Ironman. I walk my dog, often with a camera, often close to nature. Building furniture and playing my semi-hollow guitar fill the gaps. I care about animals and the environment — that probably comes through in the wildlife work.

Raff's Reflections is a personal journey covering all of it, not just photography. Follow along here or via RSS or say hi via the contact form or Mastodon.
